Comparative overview
Self-reinforced polypropylene — Self-reinforced polypropylene
Strengths: Very low density, high elongation, impact tolerance, damping and excellent dielectric transparency at low-to-moderate material cost.
When to use: Select for impact skins, luggage, helmets, automotive underbody, marine/sporting hybrids and radome/antenna structures needing toughness without conductivity.
Key tradeoffs: Low stiffness and poor heat/fire capability; creep and bonding must be managed. Usually hybridized with a stiffer fiber for structural loads.
Qualitative ratings (1–10 scale)
| Relative cost | 2/10 — Low — low-cost all-polypropylene system with scalable tape/thermoforming processing. |
|---|---|
| EM transparency | 10/10 — Exceptional — excellent dielectric and RF-transparent behavior. |
| Temperature / fire resistance | 1/10 — Very low — low melting/service temperature and flammability are major limitations. |
| Impact / penetration resistance | 8/10 — Very high — high strain, low density and self-reinforced architecture deliver excellent impact and shock resistance, including at low temperature. |
| Electrical / thermal conductivity | 1/10 — Very low — electrically insulating with low thermal conductivity. |
| Specific tensile strength | 3/10 — 3/10 | 760.9 kN·m/kg | Family estimate |
| Atmospheric durability | 5/10 — Moderate — no water absorption and good chemical resistance, but exposed polypropylene requires UV and oxidation stabilization. |
| Sustainability (CO₂e) | 9/10 — 2.00 kg CO₂e/kg fiber — Low emissions — data quality: Low |
