Comparative overview
Silicon carbide fiber — EM-functional/doped SiC fiber
Strengths: Controlled electrical behavior enables microwave absorption/EM functionality while retaining ceramic temperature capability.
When to use: Select for stealth, absorbing structures and multifunctional hot composites where attenuation—not transparency—is required.
Key tradeoffs: Extremely expensive and brittle, with difficult joining/processing; doped or conductive grades are intentionally poor for RF transparency.
Qualitative ratings (1–10 scale)
| Relative cost | 10/10 — Very high — specialized doped continuous SiC with controlled resistivity and limited supply. |
|---|---|
| EM transparency | 1/10 — Very poor — intentional conductivity/absorption produces very poor transparency but useful EM attenuation. |
| Temperature / fire resistance | 10/10 — Extreme — ceramic fiber for extreme-temperature oxidizing environments. |
| Impact / penetration resistance | 3/10 — Low — high stiffness and low failure strain give low intrinsic impact energy absorption. |
| Electrical / thermal conductivity | 9/10 — Excellent — high, engineered electrical conductivity with useful thermal transport. |
| Specific tensile strength | 3/10 — 3/10 | 925.9 kN·m/kg | Family estimate |
| Atmospheric durability | 9/10 — Excellent — SiC ceramic fiber has very high UV and weathering stability; dopants/coatings and oxidation at elevated temperature may alter functional response. |
| Sustainability (CO₂e) | 4/10 — 25.00 kg CO₂e/kg fiber — High emissions — data quality: Low |
