Comparative overview

Glass fiber — E-CR corrosion-resistant glass

Strengths: Retains the affordability and dielectric character of E-glass with improved acid/corrosion durability and typically boron-free chemistry.

When to use: Select for pipes, tanks, pultruded profiles, wind and chemical-service structures exposed to moisture or corrosive media.

Key tradeoffs: Heavier and less stiff per unit mass than carbon; not as strong as S/R-glass and chemical resistance still depends on matrix and environment.

Qualitative ratings (1–10 scale)

Relative cost2/10 — Low — commodity-like glass with corrosion-resistant chemistry and a small price premium over E-glass.
EM transparency8/10 — Very good — retains E-glass dielectric and insulating character.
Temperature / fire resistance7/10 — Very good — non-combustible; hot strength/softening remain below high-silica/quartz/ceramic fibers.
Impact / penetration resistance6/10 — Good — similar impact behavior to E-glass with improved durability in corrosive environments.
Electrical / thermal conductivity1/10 — Very low — electrically insulating with low thermal conductivity.
Specific tensile strength3/10 — 3/10 | 923.1 kN·m/kg | Family estimate
Atmospheric durability8/10 — Very good — improved acid/corrosion durability versus ordinary E-glass; retained properties still depend on sizing and matrix barrier quality.
Sustainability (CO₂e)9/10 — 1.44 kg CO₂e/kg fiber — Low emissions — data quality: High
