Comparative overview
Glass fiber — E-glass / general-purpose glass
Strengths: Lowest-cost mainstream structural fiber, non-conductive, corrosion-resistant and compatible with very high-volume processes.
When to use: Select for boats, wind, tanks, panels, pultrusion, construction and general industrial parts where cost and dielectric insulation outweigh mass.
Key tradeoffs: Higher density and lower specific stiffness/strength than carbon or aramid; ordinary E-glass is less corrosion- and fatigue-resistant than specialized grades.
Qualitative ratings (1–10 scale)
| Relative cost | 1/10 — Very low — global commodity reinforcement produced at very large scale. |
|---|---|
| EM transparency | 8/10 — Very good — good dielectric behavior and commonly used for radomes/fairings when ultra-low loss is not required. |
| Temperature / fire resistance | 7/10 — Very good — non-combustible, but softening and strength loss limit high-temperature structural service. |
| Impact / penetration resistance | 6/10 — Good — good strain-to-failure and distributed cracking provide useful low-velocity damage tolerance. |
| Electrical / thermal conductivity | 1/10 — Very low — electrically insulating with low thermal conductivity. |
| Specific tensile strength | 3/10 — 3/10 | 930.2 kN·m/kg | Family estimate |
| Atmospheric durability | 7/10 — Good — UV-stable and non-corroding, but moisture-assisted stress corrosion and leaching can reduce strength, particularly at damaged surfaces. |
| Sustainability (CO₂e) | 9/10 — 1.44 kg CO₂e/kg fiber — Low emissions — data quality: High |
