Hyosung ? Aerospace Standard
Manufacturer page / TDSDescription
Standard modulus fiber with the highest strength-to-modulus ratio among commercial fibers; ideal for pressure vessels, cable cores and general industrial/aerospace uses.
Comparative overview
Carbon fiber — Ultra-high-strength / high-strain carbon
Strengths: Maximizes tensile strength and usable strain among carbon fibers, giving excellent strength-to-weight performance.
When to use: Select for burst/pressure-dominated structures, highly loaded aerospace parts and thin lightweight laminates where tensile failure governs.
Key tradeoffs: Premium cost; stiffness may not exceed intermediate-modulus grades, and electrical conductivity/low RF transparency remain.
Qualitative ratings (1–10 scale)
| Relative cost | 10/10 — Very high — premium high-strength/high-strain PAN carbon with tight defect control. |
|---|---|
| EM transparency | 1/10 — Very poor — electrically conductive and not RF transparent. |
| Temperature / fire resistance | 6/10 — Good — non-melting but limited by oxidation in air and by matrix thermal capability. |
| Impact / penetration resistance | 8/10 — Very high — best impact potential among conventional carbon grades due to high tensile strength and strain, though still architecture-sensitive. Stored TDS elongation: 2.2%. |
| Electrical / thermal conductivity | 7/10 — High — conductive PAN carbon, but generally below pitch UHM and CNT in thermal transport. |
| Specific tensile strength | 9/10 — 9/10 | 3055.6 kN·m/kg | Product TDS |
| Atmospheric durability | 9/10 — Excellent — carbon fiber is intrinsically resistant to UV, moisture and salt exposure; long-term laminate durability is usually governed by sizing, matrix, galvanic coupling and interfaces rather than the fiber. |
| Sustainability (CO₂e) | 5/10 — 19.85 kg CO₂e/kg fiber — High emissions — data quality: High |
